333 Valley Street Intergenerational Organization


333 Valley Street An Intergenerational Organization, Inc. (also known as The Shack) provides a safe and orderly environment for youth, adults, seniors and families to learn and to grow. The summer program provides educational and outdoor programs for thirty youth of diverse backgrounds.  The Fellow will provide literacy and math tutoring, and will also assist with outdoor activities.

All Our Kin

All Our Kin invests in early childhood educators (represented mostly by women of color) who are dedicated to the well-being of children in their communities, taking an innovative approach to solving the crisis in child care and early learning that results from an acute lack of quality, affordable care for infants and toddlers across the nation. All Our Kin provides the training, resources, and support that these women need to become early childhood professionals and create enriching child care programs in home-based settings.  Through its programs, family child care providers succeed as business owners; working parents find stable, high-quality care for their children, and children gain an educational foundation that lays the groundwork for school achievement and beyond. The Fellow will work to strengthen and support All Our Kin’s family partnership initiatives with a focus on equity, inclusion and justice.

Calvin Hill Day Care Center

Calvin Hill Day Care Center and its Kitty Lustman-Findling Kindergarten provide high-quality, affordable, nurturing care and education to children between the ages of 2 years 8 months to 6 years old. The Center serves as a support for families, working in partnership with parents to meet the emotional, social, physical, intellectual, and academic needs of their children. The Fellow will work directly with children and will support overall program quality and integrated play-based, emergent curriculum.

Common Ground High School, Urban Farm, and Enviromnental Education Center

Common Ground is a center for learning and leadership, inviting people across ages and identities to connect to their urban environment, build community, grow into their full potential, and contribute to a just and sustainable world. 

Placement 1: Development and Community Events-the Fellow will work to help Common Ground’s long-term sustainability through supporting two major community events called Feast from the Fields and Feast for Fams.

Placement 2: Green Jobs Corps Farm Crew-the Fellow will provide hands-on support growing vegetables, maintaining Comon Ground’s compost system and caring for animals on the Common Ground 1 acre urban farm alongside its farm team and summer young adult interns (including technical farming workshops, food justice conversations and field trips).

Placement 3: Summer Camp-the Fellow will participate in direct service with children as a leader and mentor, helping to care for campers as they cook, play, hike, garden, build forts, make nature art, care for animals, play games, enjoy campfires, and make summer memories.

Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology (ConnCAT)

ConnCAT inspires, motivates, and prepares youth and adults for educational and career advancement through after-school arts, and job training programs.  The Youth Department serves youth between grades 5 and 11 in its six week collaborative arts program where campers are introduced to music, dance, art and digital arts culminating in a student showcase for parents and community.The Fellow will co-create and co-develop the curriculum of the summer program under the direction/supervision of the Director. Supervision of youth staff, planning, and interaction with the community and families will be an additional part of the role.

Connecticut Children’s Museum

Connecticut Children’s Museum building houses three programs, interwoven in purpose and philosophy: Creating Kids Childcare Center, the Museum itself, and the Early Childhood Resource Center. Each is inspired by psychologist Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Creating Kids Childcare Center is an accredited, full-time, not-for-profit, ethnically- and economically-diverse program dedicated to serving the needs of children ages 6 weeks to preschool age and their families in an urban setting. The Connecticut Children’s Museum offers a space for children to experience the magic of learning at their own pace. Children can interact with themed exhibits built to their size and specifications, and schools and early childhood programs are able to extend their learning on Museum field trips. The Museum also offers regular professional development workshops and a plethora of curriculum resources for New Haven-area educators through the Early Childhood Resource Center.  The Fellow will work directly with children by supporting educators in Creating Kids’ classrooms to implement play-based learning curriculum and build early literacy skills; and will work directly with the Museum’s Executive Director to support the strategic, operational, and management needs of the umbrella non-profit organization.

Friends Center for Children

Friends Center for Children is an early childhood education center providing year-round, full-time care for children in New Haven ages 3 months to 5 years.  Friends Center’s program seeks to bridge racial, ethnic, and economic divide, and to create a community of families actively involved in the education of their children. The Fellow will be supporting the Center’s Educator Respite Project by supporting the daily operations of the classroom working with children alongside the educators. The Fellow will also support educators in completing necessary tasks to finish projects and providing in classroom support to allow one teacher from the classroom team to have time out of the classroom.

Horizons at Foote School

Horizons at Foote advances educational equity through a robust academic and enrichment program that builds on long-term partnerships with families and communities to provide a joyful, safe, and inspiring learning environment that empowers students from New Haven Public Schools to thrive in an ever-changing world.  The Fellow will work with a Horizons at Foote head teacher in a classroom of 16 students during a six-week summer academic and enrichment program to help and lead small group activities, and work with students on skill development and additional classroom needs. The Fellow may also rotate/float in classrooms, and support administrative tasks of the Executive Director as needed.

Inspired Communities Inc.

Inspired Communities Inc. (ICI) is a non-profit community-based enrichment building organization that was founded in the Newhallville neighborhood of New Haven, CT) in 2019. Its mission to help create and build enrichment experiences that inspire and empower, while adding value to the neighborhood. Through its work, it seeks to impact every family that lives in Newhallville (and beyond) with ideas, solutions, information and possibilities.

Placement 1: Data Collection–the Fellow will gain hands-on enrichment experiences working with children ages 6 to 12 to help collect, formulate and organize Newhallville Street data and use it as an historical innovation tool for the Newhallville Kids Cultural Museum. This data will be used in the ICI project based on the history and culture of Newhallville streets, where most of ICI’s students live. The Fellow will assist with a summer showcase of project, and work to strengthen and support related social media efforts.

Placement 2: The  Fellow will gain  hands-on enrichment experiences working with children ages 6 to 12 as the Fellow documents behind the scenes as children and staff collect, formulate and organize Newhallville Street data and use it as an historical innovation tool for the Newhallville Kids Cultural Museum. The video will be used to give the audience an inside look at the making of the history and culture of Newhallville streets, a place where most of the ICI students live.

Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS)

Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Servcies (IRIS) helps refugees and immigrants establish new lives, regain hope, and contribute to the vitality of Connecticut’s communities. IRIS has a proud and proven track record of refugee resettlement, resettling about 7,000 refugees to the greater New Haven area, and now across all of Connecticut, since 1982.   As an assistant teacher, the Fellow will work alongside lead teachers in IRIS’ Summer Learning Program which, in 2023, will feature a new curriculum aimed at addressing social/emotional learning, cultural diversity, identity and place-based education.

Leadership Education & Athletics in Partnership (LEAP)

Leadership, Education, and Athletics in Partnership (LEAP) develops the strengths and talents of young leaders who create and implement year-round, community- and school-based programming designed to achieve positive academic and social outcomes for children living in high poverty urban neighborhoods.  LEAP develops multiple tiers of academic and social enrichment for young people between the ages of 7 and 24, preparing them to be community leaders with power and purpose. 

Placement 1: Branding and Marketing–the Fellow will help improve LEAP’s brand and marketing identity to promote its programs and fundraising needs. The Fellow will write stories about LEAP’s activities and participants, increase LEAP’s social media presence, and work on two events –the LEAP Scholarship Award Ceremony and the Read-In on the New Haven Green

Placement 2: LEAP submits over 50 grants per year to a wide variety of foundations and funding sources. The Fellow will assist LEAP’s grant writer in all aspects of its grant writing process, including conducting grants research, gathering data for grants, writing grants and reports, and tracking grants.

New Haven Reads

New Haven Reads increases the literacy skills of children to empower their academic success, providing individually tailored one-on-one after-school tutoring, educational family support, and a community book bank, all at no cost to participants. Free books are provided to social service agencies, homeless shelters, teachers, and other community programs. In addition to various administrative tasks and creative projects, the Fellow will develop relationships with the program’s students through the provision of literacy tutoring and the implementation of summer clubs.  The Fellow will also support the growth of the book bank by sorting and shelving incoming book donations.

Saint Martin de Porres Academy

Intentionally named after St. Martin de Porres, the first Black saint and the patron saint of social justice, the academy’s mission is one of social justice: to break the generational cycle of poverty through education and opportunity. Saint Martin de Porres Academy is a faith-based, NativityMiguel middle school that provides a tuition-free, extended-day education for underserved girls and boys from low-income families in the New Haven area. 

Placement 1: The Fellow will engage in all tasks related to development, marketing, and communications–event support, data entry, administrative tasks, grant research, donor analysis, writing stories, social media posting, taking photos, helping with mailings, and more.

Placement 2: The Fellow will meet individually with rising high school seniors and their families to draft and revise college essays, gather information to complete college and financial aid applications, create and revise résumés, help students research colleges/universities, complete scholarship applications, and begin completing the common app.

ScoutReach CT Yankee Council

The CT Yankee Council serves others by helping to instill values in young people, and prepares them to make ethical choices over their lifetime. The program also provides leadership opportunities for all youth through quality programs; mentoring from trained adult volunteers; ongoing learning and personal development; and engages partners in urban and rural communities nationwide to ensure that culturally diverse youth of all backgrounds and genders have the opportunity to join its scouting program.  The Fellow will prepare an analysis that will help grow and improve its summer STEM program and assist with development/fundraising.

Solar Youth

Solar Youth’s mission is to empower youth aged 5-18 from New Haven’s low-income neighborhoods to achieve lifelong success. Through programs that connect youth to the environment, their communities and each other, youth build the skills and motivations necessary to be positive contributors to their community, create healthy relationships, maintain physical and mental health, and become economically self-sufficient. Over the past 22 years, Solar Youth has built a track record as one of New Haven’s most promising solutions for empowering low-income youth. All of the children Solar Youth serves reside in low-income communities in New Haven.  The Fellow will support Solar Youth’s Executive Director with non-profit administration during the first three weeks.  The Fellow will then will support program staff during remaining weeks, work directly with youth in summer camp, and help collect end-of-season data.

Squash Haven

Squash Haven provides individually directed academic enrichment, squash instruction, and college preparation and placement to New Haven public school students in fifth grade through college. Through intensive tuition-free academic and squash sessions at Yale, Squash Haven supports New Haven youth to achieve school success, physical wellness and to forge a path through higher education to engaged citizenship. By working in Squash Haven’s summer program, the Fellow will gain an immersion in teaching and administration for a small education focused non-profit. The Fellow will teach three to four literacy blocks or academic elective sessions per day and will lead one to two major administrative projects. The Fellow will also play an active role in Squash Haven’s small staff and comprehensive programming.

Upon This Rock

Upon This Rock trains and supports the youth in the community and teaches them to strive towards their dreams and never give up. Upon This Rock assists youth and teens with homework help, resume building, interview skills, job searches, college prep.  The Fellow will provide youth between the ages of 5 and 17 with summer packets that focus on writing, math, reading, and problem solving. The Fellow will also provide arts and crafts and fun learning activities.


Yale Pathways to Science Summer Scholars Program

Over the past decade, Pathways has offered New Haven Public School students year-round access to free out-of-school programs that engage them with STEM and Arts and Humanities learning. These programs, which emphasize student engagement and hands-on learning, are designed to increase students’ interest in STEM/Arts; connect students with leading experts in these fields; and, positively influence students’ perception of their ability to succeed in college and beyond.  Each summer, the Pathways Summer Scholars programs extend and enrich academic-year programming, giving 200 New Haven high school students the opportunity to delve deeper into areas in which they have become interested. The Pathways Scholars are a diverse group of students, half would be first-in-family to go to college and 60% are from underrepresented groups.  The Fellow will join a team of Pathways staff to plan, prepare, implement, and evaluate the Pathways Summer Scholars Program. The Fellow will be a thought partner in developing activities, managing daily logistics, serving the important role of near-peer mentor, and evaluating program effectiveness.

Youth Entrepreneurs

Youth Entrepreneurs encourages and supports entrepreneurship programming for New Haven youth. Students gain business skills, learn about startup funding, and and receive mentorship to develop their business acumen, further their personal and professional development and fuel their entrepreneurial spirit.  The Fellow will teach basic business, STEM, and social justice concepts, lead students in interactive group activities, and facilitate internal and external communication.
