City of New Haven Department of Arts, Culture & Tourism

The Department of Arts, Culture & Tourism seeks to improve the quality of life for New Haven residents. By celebrating arts and culture, it becomes a catalyst for economic development, equitable civic engagement, and spiritual uplift. The Department assists, promotes, and encourages artists, arts and cultural organizations, and events in New Haven. and serves as the steward for the municipal collection of globally inspired public art. The Fellow will assist with the development of walking and virtual tours of New Haven’s vast public art collection.

City of New Haven Engineering Department

The City of New Haven’s Engineering Department designs, constructs, and maintains public infrastructure for the entire City including bridges, roads, sidewalks, drainage systems, coastal protection, and street lighting. This work includes public outreach, project concept development, engineering design, mapping, construction management, infrastructure inspection, and asset management. 

Placement 1: Climate and Sustainability Framework–the Fellow will be co-managing the City’s application to Sustainable CT. Tasks would include tracking progress on sustainability goals, outreach to partner organizations, researching specific actions and creation of communications materials. The Fellow would gain an understanding of the breadth of sustainability work being conducted in the City.

 
Placement 2: Park Equity Fellow–the Fellow will coordinate special projects selected to improve park quality in historically underserved neighborhoods.
 
 
Placement 3: Products and Materials Fellow–the Fellow will conduct in-depth research and analysis of materials used by the City of New Haven’s Engineering Department. This research will identify opportunities for reducing the embodied greenhouse gas emissions associated with the department’s material and product choices.
 
 
Placement 4: Public ArtFellow–the Fellow will develop an implementation plan for deploying artistic installations in neighborhood traditionally overlooked for public art initiatives.

City of New Haven Office of Economic Development

The Office of Economic Development facilitates commercial development, attracts quality businesses/investment, expands employment opportunity, and improves the City’s overall quality of life to create an equitable world-class city in which all residents who want a well-paying, career-oriented job can find one.  The Fellow will assist with implementation of the American Rescue Plan (ARP) COVID-recovery programs including economic development, housing and vocational/technical career pathways.

City of New Haven Youth and Recreation Department

The Youth and Recreation Department presents an Outdoor Adventure Program which offers unique, challenging, safe, and fun learning experiences for children, youth, and adults. The department seeks to foster an appreciation of local resources and exposure to bio-diversity and outdoor adventure activities, while maintaining Social Distance and abiding by CDC  recommendations. The Fellow’s work would include programs for summer camps (virtual or otherwise), and activities geared towards the general public.

Concepts for Adaptive Learning (CfAL)

CfAL works to increase youth and adult knowledge and use of technology, preparing them for success in both school and career in a constantly changing digital society.  The Fellow work directly with the executive staff to provide general operating support, as well as youth and adult programming support.

DataHaven

Data Haven’s work focuses on collecting, interpreting, and sharing public data related to social, economic, and health issues. Local stakeholders apply this information to create informed solutions to problems in their communities. The Fellow will support the work of DataHaven to implement the2022 Community Index, a major program that tracks social, economic, and well-being indicators at the state and local level, in close partnership with over 125 Connecticut-based organizations including many located in New Haven.

Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK)

DESK serves people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty by providing food assistance and services that promote health, community, and equity.  The Fellow will work with DESK’s program staff to oversee the weekly Food Pantry, assist in dinner distribution, and work directly with clients in our Drop-in & Resource Center.

Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce

The Greater New Haven Chamber provides value through business resources and services to its partner companies and leads regional economic growth through bold and effective advocacy. The Fellow will work with staff to research economic develoment opportunities, and will also prepare public policy briefs.

New Haven Works

New Haven Works, a partnership between government, community, labor and the private sector, works to ensure that regional employers and businesses have access to a local talent pool and that qualified city residents have access to good jobs. The Fellow will provide program support to New Haven Works’ member recruitment, employer engagement, and member program documentation.

Teach for America

Teach For America (TFA) addresses educational inequity by finding and developing a diverse network of leaders who expand opportunity for children from every sector that shapes the broader education system. TFA recruits a diverse network of leaders who complete two-year commitments in high-need classrooms, and then supports them into their careers.  The Fellow will engage in one of two projects: complete a community needs assessment; or create community building and support resources for incoming TFA members.

Town Green Special Services District

The Town Green Special Services District creates a vibrant and exciting place for downtown residents and visitors to live, work, learn, and play through events, public art programs, public space improvements, and its Clean and Save Ambassador program.  The Fellow will assist the events, public space, or special art projects departments.

Yale-China Association

Yale-China bridges American and Chinese cultures by creating lasting, transformative partnerships and experiences in education, health, and the arts.  The Fellow will gater data, assess opportunities ripe for engagement, and develop a strategic plan for Yale-China’s New Haven community engagement focused on the work of the Yale-China Fellowships at the New Haven Public Schools and the Public Resources Fellowship at the Ne Haven Free Public Library.
