February 19th Presentations:

The People’s Dictator: Was Getúlio Vargas a “Good Guy” or a “Bad Guy?”
Getúlio Vargas was President and dictator of Brazil from 1930–1954, and his reputation is…confusing (even for historians!). In this workshop, we will read reflections from real Brazilian people who lived under Vargas and debate whether he should be remembered as a “Good Guy” or a “Bad Guy” in Brazilian history and politics.

The Potato in World History
Did you ever think that the potato changed world history? Probably not. We will explore how the humble potato fueled empires, saved peasants from starvation, and allowed more people to live longer lives as it was carried around the world. But this process wasn’t seamless. Dive into the accounts of people encountering the potato for the first time! Teaser: Some people thought potatoes caused leprosy while for others it was the future of a healthy nation.
