Join David W. Blight in conversation with Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II as they discuss Barber’s new book, White Poverty: How Exposing Myths About Race and Class Can Reconstruct American Democracy (Liveright, 2024).

This event, sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition, the MacMillan Center at Yale University, and the Center for Public Theology and Public Policy at Yale Divinity School, will explore the persistent myths surrounding race and poverty in America. Barber, a prominent advocate for the rights of the poor, will address the issue of white poverty—an often overlooked and politically charged topic—and how exposing these myths may help bridge racial divides and strengthen democracy.

The event will be co-sponsored by Belonging at Yale, the Afro American Cultural Center at Yale, and The Campaign School at Yale.
