Event Description:

Since the mid-1980s, Andrea Fraser has worked in the realm of institutional critique, investigating and demonstrating the ways in which organizations, groups, and individuals hold and wield power. Often exposing and challenging the biases of arts institutions, her videos, performances, and texts deftly combine careful research with incisive, often humorous, delivery. This meeting is being recorded (2021; 99 mins.) brings these approaches to bear on the complex subject of white women and race. Based on transcripts of discussions that Fraser organized in 2020, this absorbing video explores and exposes the challenges of discovering and reckoning with internalized beliefs. Following the screening, the artist will be joined in conversation by Margaret Ewing, the Horace W. Goldsmith Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. Generously cosponsored by the Yale University Art Gallery’s Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund and the Whitney Humanities Center.
