This program is an opportunity to build meaningful relationships between a cohort of high school students and a team of dedicated surgical residents and health care professionals who are immersed in the practice of delivering medical care and health services.

The Health Career Collaborative is intended to be a three-year program, so students are encouraged to continue after their first year. Each year is designed to build on the learning and confidence of the previous year while also offering a self-contained experience of meaning and value to all who participate.

In Year 1, students encounter new emergency room case studies at each session, building foundational knowledge and skills. The focus of Year 2 shifts to broader questions of public health as students deepen specific knowledge and insights about healthcare. Finally, Year 3 is when students apply their experience and understanding in community health leadership roles and present at a Community Health Fair.

Topics Covered in Year 1

  • Chronic Diseases
  • Orthopedics
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn)
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Vascular Disorders

This is an application based program. Eligible 9-10th grade students at Hill Regional Career, James Hillhouse, and Wilbur Cross High Schools will receive an invitation to apply.
